Building the infrastructure behind a faster developer’s experience

Bit.io was building a zero-setup cloud database for developers and data teams. We partnered with its engineering team to bring that same focus on developer productivity to its own infrastructure.
Designed a consistent approach across local development and cloud environments.
Built Kubernetes infrastructure for QA and production.
Improved CI build times and introduced monitoring, logging, alerting, and automated tests.
Bit.io already used Tilt to create a fast local development loop.
The next challenge was creating a workflow that extended cleanly into cloud deployment without making developers manage different systems at every stage.
A development environment built around iteration speed
We evaluated the available tools and helped configure Tilt for local work while developing the CI/CD approach for Kubernetes-based cloud environments.
We also built QA and production infrastructure and introduced monitoring, logging, alerting, and automated testing.

Make a change locally. See it quickly. Ship it reliably.
Developers can work in a fast local environment while the underlying tooling carries the same application toward QA and production.
Automated checks and observability make failures easier to catch before and after deployment.

Developer productivity is infrastructure
The goal was not simply to run the application in Kubernetes.
It was to reduce the amount of time engineers spent waiting for builds, setting up environments, and diagnosing infrastructure problems.
Infrastructure ready for private beta
The new development and cloud infrastructure helped Bit.io prepare for and successfully launch its private beta.
