Building an experimentation platform from 0-1

Eppo grew from an early idea into a platform used by hundreds of companies, and now part of Datadog. We supported the product from its first build through every stage of growth.
Joined Eppo as its first engineering team, working directly with founder Chetan Sharma to build the platform from the ground up.
Expanded Eppo across experimentation and feature management, including SDK infrastructure for multi-language feature flagging.
Continued working with the team through the Datadog acquisition and the next generation of its experimentation products.
After building experimentation systems at Airbnb and Webflow, Eppo founder Chetan Sharma saw an opportunity to make rigorous experimentation accessible to more teams. Eppo set out to bring experiments, analysis, and learnings into one product.
Che knew what he wanted to build, and he needed a technical team that could get it into customers' hands quickly without taking shortcuts that would limit the product later.
A foundation built to last
Eppo was technically demanding from the start. The platform needed to connect directly to customers’ data warehouses, automate sophisticated statistical analysis, and make the results useful to product teams without requiring constant analyst support.
We translated Che’s product and data models into Eppo’s initial architecture, database model, and application. Those foundations continued to support the product as it grew, expanding across experimentation, reporting, feature flagging, targeting, and SDKs.

From rollout to result, in one place
Eppo brings feature flagging and experimentation into one workflow. Teams can launch a feature, control who sees it, measure the impact against metrics in their own data warehouse, investigate the results, and decide what to do next.
The goal was to make rigorous experimentation accessible to more teams without hiding the underlying data or requiring analysts to repeat the same investigation every time an experiment ran.

Shaping the experimentation category
When Eppo expanded into feature flagging, it needed consistent, high-performance SDKs across a growing number of languages. Our team moved shared flag-evaluation logic into a high-performance Rust core that could be reused across SDKs. Flags behaved the same way in every language, and adding a new SDK no longer meant reimplementing the evaluation logic. The pattern has since become common across the category.

Built to keep evolving
As Eppo built its own engineering organization, our role evolved with it. Fluxon engineers worked inside Eppo's product pods alongside its PMs, designers, and engineers, sharing a backlog and reviewing one another's code.
The work expanded from the original experimentation platform into feature flagging, SDKs, advanced experimentation, contextual bandits, and AI model testing. That collaboration continued through Eppo’s acquisition by Datadog and into the next generation of its experimentation products.
“The ability to deliver high quality products fast is basically where it starts and ends. Fluxon gave us the team and the leverage to do that from the beginning.”
From first build to acquisition, together
By 2024, Eppo had grown from an early-stage experimentation product into a platform used by companies including Coinbase, DraftKings, Twitch, Descript, and Perplexity. It raised $47.5 million before joining Datadog in 2025, where it now underpins Datadog's experimentation and feature-management products.
